The 77th Annual Meeting of the Genetics Society of Japan was held in September 27-29, 2005 at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center, Yayoi, Tokyo. The meeting was organized by the Center for Information Biology (CIB) and the National Institute of Genetics (NIG). The scientific program covered a wide range of fields related to Genetics, several keynote speakers from abroad participated in the meeting as well as notable local researchers.
The chairman of the meeting Prof. Takashi Gojobori was honored with the award of the KIHARA prize for his substantial contributions to the fields of Genetics and Evolution. The meeting was successfully organized and had a significant increased in the number of participants.

International bioinformatics training course in Taiwan

Two international training courses were given in Taiwan one at Yang-Ming University in Taipei (July 6-8) and the other at the National Health Research Institute (NHRI) in Hsin Chu (July 11-12) by three Professors from DDBJ. Prof. Yoshio Tateno gave lectures on Molecular Evolution, Prof. Naruya Saitou taught students about Molecular Phylogeny and Dr. Roberto Barrero introduced the services and tools available at DDBJ, with special emphasis in using the SAKURA nucleotide sequence data submission system, sequence retrieval systems (getentry, ARSA and SRS), GTOP and H-Inv DB.
The number of attendees to the theoretical lectures were about 20-25 people, while for the practical sessions 10-15 people took part in.
A new invitation by local researchers was extended to DDBJ professors to make another International Training Course in the summer of 2007.

 DDBJing Seminar

"DDBJing" is a workshop to learn how to use the softwares developed and provided by DDBJ to conduct various tasks -database search, data analysis, data submission, etc-. This workshop has been previously held 11 times.
The 12th seminar of the DDBJing was held on June 8 to 9, 2005 at the National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, Shizuoka. A total of 31 persons attended this seminar, and they actively interacted with DDBJ lecturers.
The latest 13th seminar of the DDBJing was held on September 1 to 2, 2005 at Tokyo University of Agriculture, Setagaya, Tokyo. A total of 56 persons attended this seminar. Most of the participants were student of the Tokyo University of Agriculture.
